Malaysia

Malaysia celebrates its own version of Valentine’s Day, called “Chap Goh Mei”, which translates to “the fifthteenth night of Chinese New Year,” which is exactly when this holiday starts (February 8th this year!). Women will typically throw tangerines in the sea in hopes that it will bring them a husband. Sometimes, these tangerines will even include a phone number on them for those who come across these floating oranges.

Kuala Lumpur

Philippines

In the Philippines, couples celebrate Valentine’s Day by getting married! On this day, there are literally hundreds of weddings that take place, with a lot of them being mass weddings. Some cities also hold mass weddings, where everything is free of charge. This immensely helps those who couldn’t afford to pay for their own wedding ceremony, and is the reason why February is one of the Philippines most common wedding months.

Manila

South Korea

South Korea’s celebration of love lasts throughout a few months and starts on February 14th, where the women give gifts to men first. The month after, on White Day, the men get gifts for the women that are significantly more valuable. On April 14th, or Black Day, those who didn’t receive a gift on Valentine’s or White Day will eat black noodles and cheer themselves up with other single people.

Seoul

Taiwan

Like South Korea, Taiwan celebrates Valentine’s and White Day too. But, they also have their own day of love on the 7th of July. On this day, men traditionally give women beautiful bouquets of roses, and the number of roses given have different meanings to them. One rose means love, eleven means favorite, ninety-nine means forever, and one-hundred and eight means a marriage proposal!
