Uruguay's vibrant capital Montevideo is home to half of the country's population and is a major cultural hub for the whole of Latin American. This is a city of great contrast, where half is historic and bursting with colonial buildings and cultural vibrancy while the other half is a modern, high-rise city with excellent beach-side amenities that more resembles Miami. The city is considered the most gay friendly in Latin America and even has a Monument to Sexual Diversity. From tango dancing to delicious steaks, some of the highest standards of living and the best wealth equality on the whole continent as well as excellent festivals in the form of Carnaval and Independence Day, there's never a dull day in Montevideo.
There are a great many things to do in the energetic and sophisticated city of Montevideo ranging from dancing to dining, historic tours and laid-back beach afternoons.
Along with Buenos Aires, Montevideo has UNESCO recognition for being the birthplace of Tango. Many tango clubs are dotted around the city with workshops too for those who want to give it a try. If tango is the cultural psyche of the city, then Asado is the city's stomach. Asado is a type of BBQ available at roadside grills and restaurants known as parrillas. The country is particularly famous for its tasty beef which is the main show of any asado.
Ciudad Vieja: Old Town
The city's Old Town, known as Ciudad Vieja, is the most historic area of Uruguay having been built from the earliest days of regional colonialism in the 18th century. The Gateway of the Citadel and the landmark Palacio Salvo are both located in the centre of the Old Town in Plaza Independencia -- the city's main square. The beautiful 19th-century, Neo-Classic Solis Theatre is also found in the Old Town.
Sun, Sea and Surf
The city's excellent position on the Atlantic coast makes it a hugely popular destination for beach lovers. The best beaches can be found in the Punta suburbs: a series of well-heeled beach communities to the east of the city. Those visiting the Puntas for a day can enjoy polo tournaments, yachting, tennis, fashion shows and even casinos. Pocitos is a great beach for those who don't want to travel too far from the city. Its urban location means it boasts many good facilities, restaurants and shops and its large sandy beach is excellent for volleyball and swimming.
Events in Montevideo are largely religious or patriotic but are neither dull nor sombre. All these festivals are celebrated with much music, dancing and merriment.
Carnaval. Carnaval (Mardi Gras) take place during Shrove Week and is as big in Montevideo as it is in Rio or Buenos Aires. This major celebration includes fancy dress parades, dancing, music, fireworks and much jolliness. During the same week, a further vibrant festival of Las Llamadas is enjoyed by the city's black community.
Holy Week. Easter Week is celebrated in Uruguay as Christmas is in Europe with families getting together for the whole time and parades occurring in the capital.
Independence Day. Marking independence from European powers in 1825, this event on the 25th August is celebrated with much fervour in the capital, where festivities go on till dawn.
