Pittsburgh is the second biggest city in the US state of Pennsylvania. The city enjoys a significant pre-confederate history and today it represents a major link between the Midwest and the Atlantic Coast. With a population of nearly half a million people, this high-rise "City of Bridges" straddles three rivers. The city may have grown rich from the steel industry but has managed to maintain post-industrial wealth by attracting the likes of Google and Apple. As a consequence, the city's residents enjoy a high standard of living while visitors enjoy excellent facilities, world-class museums and well-invested cultural venues. The city's position at the crossroads of the U.S. regions of the northwestern, midwestern and southern states makes it unique and diverse in character. Events worth being in town for include the St Patrick's Day Parade, one of the best in the U.S..
As a historic and highly developed city there are a great many attractions, landmarks and activities to enjoy in Pittsburgh.
The city's rich cultural and social heritage comes to life in the Gilded Age Sites. These are comprised of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Science Center, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Museum and the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Art lovers can also visit the Andy Warhol Museum and The Frick Art & Historical Center. Those travelling with children should head to the fascinating Children's Museum in the Downtown area.
Cultural Pittsburgh
Excellent investment in the performing arts means the city plays host to a wide selection of classical arts. Visitors can experience the municipal Ballet Theatre, Opera and Symphony Orchestra at the Benedum Center as well as the River City Brass Band and the Youth Symphony. The diverse city also supports and nurtures many alternative genres including bluegrass, jazz and blues as well as hardcore punk and punk rock.
Catch a game
Arguably one of the sportiest cities in the U.S., this was the first to host a World Series and even a professional football game. With leading professional football, hockey, basketball and baseball teams, there is always a sports game to book tickets for during your time in the city. It's also home of the Three Rivers Regatta and the Vintage Grand Prix.
As a cultural beacon for the region, Pittsburgh plays host to a wide variety of annual events and festivities.
St Patrick's Day Parade. This is a city with a rich Irish heritage and St Patrick's day is as big here as anywhere in March. Celebrations include a massive street parade and much post-parade merriment in the city's numerous bars.
Three Rivers Arts Festival. This week-long arts festival in early June is the biggest in the city. This free event includes a number of music shows and arts events.
Renaissance Fair. The city hosts the second biggest Renaissance fair in Pennsylvania held over a month in late summer (August/September).
