Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana and the cultural hub of the state. It is a historic city and was founded in 1821 before becoming a centre for trade and transportation. The city was planned meticulously on a grid system making it an easy place for tourists to navigate; there aren't many confusing little back streets to get lost in!
The city has many examples of great architecture. In particular, the 7-block long Indiana World War Memorial Plaza Historic District, which is often celebrated as one of the best examples of the grand and graceful City Beautiful movement. Designers of this style of building hoped that it would increase the quality of life for the city's inhabitants, making a more harmonious society. Whether this worked or not is still a hotly debated topic, but it's hard not to admire the stunning results.
The city is also known for its multitude of tourist attractions; there is something for everyone, from the educational yet inspiring Children's Museum through to the city's vast, futuristic Museum of Art. Events-wise, petrol heads will love the Month of May which sees a series of celebrations leading up to the Indianapolis 500 car race. The Indiana State Fair is another firm favourite with locals and out-of-towners alike. The Beatles even performed there in the 1960s!
Indianapolis is full of cultural attractions as well as beautiful parks and iconic buildings.
Museums: high culture and fun with the family
The top two museums are the Children's Museum and the Museum of Art. The former has magical interactive exhibits and the latter has artwork from Monet and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Get away from it all... in the middle of it all
The White River State Park is an 'urban park'; a wilderness hidden in the middle of the bustling city. It has an informative visitor centre as well as beautiful vistas of the canal. It has lots of quiet benches that are perfect for relaxing after a long day's sightseeing.
Catch a baseball game with the locals
The Victory Field Stadium is an unmissable attraction for sports fans. Home to the local baseball team, the Indians, attending a game here is the best way to soak in the passionate atmosphere of the city.
Indianapolis hosts some of the most famous events and festivals in the US. Many of them are hosted in the spring and summer, but it really is a year-round city with something -- from sport to food, music and art -- happening every month.
Indianapolis 500. Every May there are dozens of events that lead up to this world-famous motor race. There are weeks of qualifying races in the lead-up before finalists compete over memorial day weekend with added concerts, parades and parties.
Indiana State Fair. This fair is a must-see for thrill seekers, thanks to its crazy rides. Those looking for something a little more sedate can enjoy the various architectural exhibits.
Historic Irvington Halloween Festival. This festival is the USA's largest and oldest Halloween festival. It features a fun run, outdoor movie screenings and out-of-this-world costume competitions.
