One of Ohio's most famous cities, Cincinnati reaches from the southwestern edge of Ohio into Northern Kentucky and even southeastern Indiana. Originally the city was named Losantiville, meaning "town opposite the mouth" of the Licking River, and it was named by John Filson, one of the first people to settle in the Ohio Valley. In 1790, General Arthur St Clair renamed the city in honour of the Society of Cincinnati, an organisation of Revolutionary War officers. The city has a chic, sociable feel during the day that evolves into a vibrant nightlife scene at night.
