Buffalo in the western New York State sits on the banks of Lake Erie close to the Canadian/US border. This once-industrial powerhouse remains to be a great city where culture, the arts, history and a love of food come together to make for an excellent destination. Buffalo is also the largest US city near Niagara Falls and many visitors include a day trip to the waterfall or simply stop here en route to the natural wonder. Famous for inventing the now globally renowned Buffalo chicken wing, this tasty foodstuff is celebrated in the city each year at the annual Chicken Wing Festival. The second largest city in New York State also plays host to the biggest two-day food festival in the US.
Buffalo was once the home to more millionaires than anywhere in the US, which means it has a history of excellent infrastructure, culture and the arts. Today, this means the city is home to many leading attractions, green spaces, top cuisine and also has excellent access to Niagara Falls.
Unlike much larger cities in the region, notably Pittsburgh and New York, this is a relatively small destination that's easy to navigate. Many of the main attractions are located in the Downtown area and can be seen within a day or two. These include the stunning Art Deco City Hall complete with observation tower and Shea's Theater. The city's baseball team, the Bisons, also boast a stadium in the heart of the central area. Also take a wander along Delaware Avenue, known locally as Millionaire Row, which is home to the city's most elegant and prestigious mansions built at the turn of the 20th century.
Not only is it the birthplace of the now world-famous Buffalo wing, the city has also been ranked by National Geographic as a Top Ten World Food City. Much of the city's varied and innovative foodstuffs can be credited to its hugely diverse population with influences from Asian, Caribbean, Mexican, Jewish, Arabian and Italian cuisine. Head to the unassuming Anchor Bar to taste the original chicken wing which was first served here in the 1960s. Also worth trying is the local favourite: Beef on Weck roll.
Events in Buffalo tend to centre on food, drink, fun and heritage. Here's a pick of the best.
Taste of Buffalo. During the second week of July, this festival is a testament to the city's top ranking as a foodie destination. This two-day event pays homage to the diversity of the city's cuisine on its most prestigious road, Delaware Avenue.
Erie Country Fair. This is one of the most popular summer events -- a week-long fair in the Hamburg suburb that is extremely popular with youngsters and families. Held in mid to late August
National Chicken Wing Festival. Held on the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend (early September), this one-day event in the downtown area heralds the famous chicken wing.
