Ivano-Frankovsk was founded in 1663 and was originally part of Poland. The city thrived and became a part of the Austrian Empire. However, by the beginning of the 20th century, many fortifications and grand buildings were demolished or in a poor state of repair. After World War Two, Ivano-Frankovsk joined the former USSR but is now part of independent Ukraine. With a small-ish city centre that's easy to walk around in a few hours, Ivano-Frankovsk is a lively place, full of locals and visitors alike.
Enjoy a stroll along the main pedestrian street called Nezalezhnosti Street, known locally as the "one hundred meters" street. The main square, Rynok, features a mix of 1950's and 1990's architecture but is impressive nonetheless. The most prominent attraction is the town hall, which stands proud and is an excellent Ukrainian example of Art Deco architecture. As well as being wonderful to look at, the town hall has a museum and a lot of tourist information, including useful maps to guide visitors around the city and beyond. Ivano-Frankovsk is home to many annual festivals during the summer, including the Carpathian Area Festival, Literature Festival and Blacksmiths Festival.
Ivano-Frankovsk is a very accessible place and seeing the sights is easy on foot while stopping for refreshments at the many charming cafes.
