Cheap Flights To Gazipasa

Nestling at the foot of the mighty Taurus mountains, the ancient settlement of Gazipasa is a delightfully unspoilt gem of Turkey's southern coast. It's a taste of the real Turkey, where farming and fishing still hold sway and the pace of life is a little slower.

There's much to fascinate and delight any traveller to Gazipasa. The area has been settled for over 4,000 years and sights of historical interest are around every corner. This isn't a destination for the tourist expecting wild nightlife or high end shopping; even though a yacht marina and international airport have recently been built. But for a traveller after fresh air, stunning views and a contemplative and relaxing atmosphere, it's got a lot to offer.

Things To Do

  • The scenery

Gazipasa's unique location nestled between the mountains and sea mean that this is a place of stunning views. The coast is essential to visit, with its mix of broad sweeping beaches and charming little coves. Some of these beaches are nesting sites for loggerhead turtles, and therefore cannot be built on, which only adds to their charm. Stepping away from the coast there are breathtaking views to be had in the Taurus mountains which rise behind the town. Walking tours can take you deep into these wondrous mountains to breathe the air and drink in the views.

  • Going back in time

Another of the local natural wonders are the beautiful caves. Step back in time at sites like Yalan Dunya Magrasl, take a tour of these marvellous caverns and gape at the rock formations which have taken millions of years to develop. There are also more recent, but still ancient, ruined castles and sites around the town. Of particular interest is the ruined Roman city of Antiocha ad Cragum, founded in 170 B.C. Much is visible still today, including fortifications, chapels and the largest Roman Mosaic in Turkey. A fascinating glimpse into the past.

  • Local flavour

One of the real highlights of any trip to Turkey is the fantastic cuisine. The area is rich in local produce, from freshly-caught fish to local citrus fruits, and when the produce is this fresh, there's always good eating to be had. Try the harbour for a slice of authentic local flavour. More a large rock pool than a harbour per se, you can work up an appetite with a swim before trying one of the little places selling traditional food.

Calendar Of Events

Gazipasa isn't the place to come if you're after wild carnivals. But there some interesting and quirky events to interest any visitor.

  • Walking with sheep: Every May visitors can join the local sheep as they take their annual trip to higher grazing. This two-day walk is a different way to take in some of the great scenery.

  • Ataturk Day: On May 19th every year all of Turkey celebrates the founder of their independent state, Ataturk. The celebrations particularly focus on games and sport for children.

  • Alanya International Art and Culture festival: For something more cerebral, try this internationally renowned Culture festival held every October in nearby Alanya.
