Jerez de la Frontera in the Cadiz province of Andalusia, Spain is a historic and cultural destination with many attractions. The city is famed for its sherry wine production and also for the traditional flamenco of the region. It is also well known for the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art with its famous horses. The city hosts a Jerez Horse Fair each year at the beginning of May. The old quarter of the city is an interesting visit with its partially-restored 11th-century Alcazar or Moorish fortress dating back to the Arab occupation, the 17th century Cathedral and other sites. History buffs will enjoy exploring the Archaeological Museum, and an unusual attraction is the Crocodile Farm Kariba with its Nile crocodiles.
The cuisine of the city includes a typical Mediterranean diet of freshly caught fish and seafood along with other Andalusian treats. A visit to a sherry and brandy bodega is a must in the city to sample the local produce while enjoying a live flamenco show. On that subject, February and March see the city's annual Flamenco Festival, which attracts international artists. The Jerez Sherry Festival is also held each year at the beginning of September as part of the autumn fair celebrations.
Jerez de la Frontera has many fascinating sites to visit to suit everyone's tastes including a range of museums, art galleries and churches. The culture of the city is also worth exploring, including the sherry wine industry and the beautiful Andalusian horses.
The city's Archaeological Museum is housed in an 18th-century building in the centre of the city. On display is a rare Corinthian helmet along with various Roman ceramics and other artefacts from the Roman, Neolithic and prehistoric times.
A ten-minute drive out of the city takes visitors on a guided tour of more than 1,300 crocodiles ranging from babies to adults of five meters in length. The crocodiles live in an artificial river on the property and it is possible to hold a baby crocodile during the tour.
Home to the famed horses of the region, the school offers the magical Andalusian horse displays with their precision dance techniques. It is also possible to take a short tour of the premises where a digital cinema gives a presentation of equestrian art in Andalusia.
Jerez de la Frontera hosts a wide range of annual fairs and festival, including religious and cultural events of all kinds. The following are some of the more popular events.
Jerez Flamenco Festival. Held at the end of February and running into March each year, the Flamenco Festival celebrates the passion and soul of flamenco music and dance. The sound of the classical Spanish guitar is the background for a creative mix of dancers from all over the world.
Jerez Horse Fair. Held during the first week of May, the horse fair dates back some 500 years. Various horse events are held in the "casetas" of the city and in the city's fairgrounds to both sell and simply show off these impressive horses.
Jerez Sherry Festival. The annual sherry festival is held on the first Saturday of September as part of the city's autumn fair. A parade led by the Queen of Sherry heads through the city's streets while everyone flocks to the bodegas in the Plaza de Arenal to pay tribute to the wine.
