Ibiza is one of the smallest of the sun-drenched Balearic Islands and an iconic destination for music-lovers, families, yoga-travellers and independent explorers alike. Many people have preconceived notions about this glamourous 'party' island, but in fact it is an ancient and historic destination with UNESCO recognised heritage sites. Blessed with a rich culture that blends influences from mainland Spain with its own relaxed way of life, visitors can enjoy the contrast of exciting towns with lush, peaceful landscapes and endless beaches.
Of course, the notoriously hedonistic nightlife is a primary draw for many younger visitors, who head to world-famous superclubs such as Pascha, Manumission, Cream, Ministry of Sound and Amnesia in the Town and San Antonio de Portmany. The feel is exciting, glamorous and very international, with clubbers prepared to pay handsomely for entry to see international DJs. In the daytime, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back. Ibiza town is beautiful with superb restaurants and a beautifully preserved old centre. Many visitors escape the town entirely and head to the island's rugged and commanding coastline, which is still left highly undeveloped, especially towards Portinatx.
With a climate that is warm all year round, families also come here to relax in villas. Health clubs, yoga retreats and artistic holidays all do a busy trade in the lush green countryside, all with access to unspoiled beaches.
Dance the night away, eat international fare, learn stand-up paddle boarding, take a dawn yoga class on the beach or watch the sunset at Cafe Del Mar; there is an activity for every vibe and activity level.
Glamour, champagne and international DJ's abound when you flash the cash and prepare to dance the night away in Ibiza. Many clubbers hit their favourite spots directly from the airport, with the action starting from around midnight and continuing until dawn... and beyond.
Head to Es Cana on the Island's east side for a browse at the long-standing hippie market. Ibiza has been loved by hippies of all kinds for decades, and you'll find everything from beads and bags through to leather goods, books and other trinkets as you chat with interesting people and enjoying leisurely refreshments as you go.
See the imposing 400-metre-high Es Vedra rock at Cala D'Hort. This nature reserve is 3 km off the coast, and if you can visit at sunset you'll have the most incredible view... and memories. Just remember to bring your camera.
The island has a lively and entertaining calendar of events, many of which focus around food, drink, dancing and general celebration of the good life!
International Mountain Bike Event. Held in April, cyclists from across the world gather to tackle the cross-country event which spans over 200 km in three events.
May Festival in Santa Eulalia. Island legend says that the old church roof collapsed mid-mass but miraculously killed no one. Today, the locals celebrate with a wonderful day of parades, vintage cars, food, horse-drawn carriages, flowers and fireworks!
Las Dalias Hippy Market: This runs in Sant Carlos every Saturday and throughout the year. As well as items to buy, you can enjoy organic juices, local food and massages. Don't forget to try the delicious Arabian tea!
