Jeju is Korea's largest island and is a highly favoured holiday destination with wonderful beaches, green countryside and hotels by the sea promoting rest and repose. In addition to taking it easy and soaking in the sun, there are plenty of activities for the more adventurous. For example, hiking up Hallasan -- the highest mountain in South Korea -- or climbing up Seongsan Ilchul-bong that juts out into the sea. Those who prefer more sedate pastimes can stroll along the Jeju Olle Trails -- exploring the island's coasts or meandering through the narrow lanes with cottages forged from black lava rock.
The island was once part of Jeollanam-do Province but gained independence in 1946. Recently, it's become Korea's one and only Special Autonomous Province. Often nicknamed the "Island of the Gods", the island is no longer than 70 km but travelling from place to place can vary depending on the roads, terrain and transport method. Spending time on the island isn't all about the great outdoors and there are also interesting museums like the Haenyeo Museum and the Folklore and Natural Museum, which tell of the island's traditions and history. There are many annual festivals to enjoy, including the KOR|EAT Food Festival in early March, the Winter Festival in December and the Olle Walking Festival in November.
With amazing beaches, parks, museums and other landmarks, Jeju island is a true paradise on so many levels that's ready and waiting for visitors to explore.
Soak in some culture at the museums
Haenyeo Museum tells the story of the island's women divers, which is fascinating and well worth a visit. The Folklore and Natural Museum is all about the formation and history of this wonderful place, and it's easy to spend half a day there.
Visit a stunning national park
Hallasan National Park is a place to take a leisurely walk under the canopy of the forest. However, those who are more intrepid can climb the volcano, South Korea's highest mountain.
Lounge on the lovely beaches
Two of the island's best beaches are Hamdeok Beach with fine white sand and Hyeopjae Beach with very blue water, tide pools, lava stones and sandy beach.
The island is alive with many annual events that focus on its culture as well as the fabulous outdoor opportunities to enjoy.
KOR|EAT Food Festival. In the Hyatt Regency Jeju Cliff Garden, chefs from top restaurants attend this festival, cooking and serving dishes from their food trucks. Pick up special recipes and buy fresh ingredients from the Farmer's Market.
Jeju Winter Festival. The winter festival is designed to get people out and about during the colder months and is a real winter extravaganza with sports and Korean cultural experiences.
The Jeju Olle Walking Festival. This walking festival takes place along the island's scenic roads. In addition to walking, it's a chance to meet the locals and enjoy art, culture and local foods.
