South Africa has earned its reputation as one of the best tourist destinations in the world not only because of its spectacular landscapes and amazing wildlife but also because of its people. They call themselves the 'Rainbow Nation': a term coined by the Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe the coming-together of people from different backgrounds and nations who are bound together by a love for their country. They live by the philosophy of Ubuntu by valuing the indispensable human virtues of compassion and humanity. In this hospitable country, Port Elizabeth is affectionately known as 'the friendly city' and it lives up to this name. It is not all that surprising that the locals are so happy and friendly; this coastal town has some spectacular beaches along a 40-kilometre coastline, a great gastronomy scene and it is one of the country's premier destinations for game viewing and safaris. On top of that, the city enjoys a warm climate throughout the year. Winters can be cooler but remain mild, and summers are warm but not too humid. The constant breeze also makes it a haven for water sports like sailing and surfing.
Whether you are interested in a luxury beach holiday, an African safari or just a fantastic family-friendly holiday, Port Elizabeth is the ideal destination.
Fun in the sun
A popular destination in South Africa when it comes to water sports and boat tours, Port Elizabeth lies on the warm Indian Ocean. Water temperatures range between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius in summer creating ideal conditions for snorkelling, swimming or even just lounging on the beach. Three of Port Elizabeth's beaches -- the Kings Beach, Humewood Beach and Hobie Beach -- have even been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status, making them some of the most sought-after beaches to visit in terms of cleanliness, water quality and security.
See the big 5
Port Elizabeth may be known for its world-class beaches, but the malaria-free wildlife parks in the region create a rare opportunity to enjoy the beach and bush in one holiday. There are several private game reserves to choose from, but make sure to book a tour to a big five reserve, where you could get the opportunity to see elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo in their natural habitat.
Route 67
A collection of 67 artworks that symbolise the 67 years that Nelson Mandela dedicated to the freedom of South Africa make up the Route 67 walk.
Port Elizabeth offers many family-friendly annual events which include getting up close and personal with nature, taking part in sporting events alongside the locals and appreciating the art of South Africa.
The annual sardine run. The southern African sardine run occurs annually when billions of sardines move eastward along the coastline of South Africa. With shoals reaching 7km in length, 1.5km in width and going as deep as 30 metres, the huge volume of sardines start a feeding frenzy that creates the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of marine animals. The sardine run in Port Elizabeth typically takes place between mid-April and mid-May of every year.
Splash Festival. Every April, the city hosts a four-day festival with sports events, children's entertainment, concerts and more. It is a fun festival with a carnival atmosphere that the whole family will enjoy.
ArtEC. Held in summer, usually from late July into early August, this art event is run by the EPSAC Community Arts Centre and showcases work by artists from all over South Africa. Prizes are up for grabs for the best works on show.
