Situated in the southeastern part of Panay Island, the vibrant and diverse region of Iloilo is one of many contrasts and home to more than two million inhabitants. Nicknamed the 'Heart of the Philippines', the city's picturesque harbour ensured that the region developed into a thriving business centre at the turn of the century, trading with countries from all over the world, particularly when the sugar trade was at its peak. The architecture in the region reflects the country's American and Spanish colonial heritage and those who appreciate history will be delighted by the city's array of museums and historical sites.
The area enjoys a tropical wet and dry climate, with humid conditions and very mild winters. Both Iloilo and the surrounding areas are blessed with lush and scenic countryside and the beaches are reputed to be the best in the Philippines. The area is also dubbed the 'Province of Festivals', due to the plethora of colourful festivals, events and parades which occur throughout the year. The fourth weekend of January is when the Dinagyang Festival is hosted in the city and is a celebration of Santo Niño and the Malay communities arrival to the region. A succession of competitions featuring ethnic dancing and music are held over the weekend and participants dress in traditional costume.
Iloilo boasts a myriad of interesting attractions and things to do for visitors, from dancing the night away in one of the city's clubs to admiring the region's stunning countryside.
