Situated in the southeastern part of Panay Island, the vibrant and diverse region of Iloilo is one of many contrasts and home to more than two million inhabitants. Nicknamed the 'Heart of the Philippines', the city's picturesque harbour ensured that the region developed into a thriving business centre at the turn of the century, trading with countries from all over the world, particularly when the sugar trade was at its peak. The architecture in the region reflects the country's American and Spanish colonial heritage and those who appreciate history will be delighted by the city's array of museums and historical sites.
The area enjoys a tropical wet and dry climate, with humid conditions and very mild winters. Both Iloilo and the surrounding areas are blessed with lush and scenic countryside and the beaches are reputed to be the best in the Philippines. The area is also dubbed the 'Province of Festivals', due to the plethora of colourful festivals, events and parades which occur throughout the year. The fourth weekend of January is when the Dinagyang Festival is hosted in the city and is a celebration of Santo Niño and the Malay communities arrival to the region. A succession of competitions featuring ethnic dancing and music are held over the weekend and participants dress in traditional costume.
Iloilo boasts a myriad of interesting attractions and things to do for visitors, from dancing the night away in one of the city's clubs to admiring the region's stunning countryside.
Visit Balbalasang-Balbalan National Park. Spanning almost 4,000 hectares, the scenery in this vast area of outstanding natural beauty is simply jaw dropping. The area is also the natural habitat for almost 90 species of birds and a selection of mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
Spend the day at Bolobadiangan Beach with its fine white sands and secluded coves. This beach is also a favourite with snorkelers due to its vast and colourful coral reef.
Visit Molo Church and Plaza in the Molo District. Known as the feminist church due to the selection of 16, all women statues of saints along the church's aisle. The church was built in the neo-gothic style and overlooks the cosmopolitan Molo Square.
Dubbed the 'Province of Festivals' due to the sheer number of events and celebrations that occur throughout the year, the residents of Iloilo entertain festival goers with elaborate parades and traditional costume.
The Dinagyang Festival: Expect fist fights, ethnic dancing, costumes and colourful parades and competitions at the Dinagyang Festival. Hosted the last weekend in January and spanning two days, this charming event is a celebration of the Malay communities arriving in the area and Santo Niño.
The Paraw Regatta: The Paraw Regatta occurs in February and features sailboat racing in brightly coloured Paraws, street performances, water sports and live music.
The Anihan Festival: Held throughout the month of September, the Anihan Festival is held in honour of the Patron Saint Jerome and participants give thanks for their abundant harvest. The event features a food fair, a Miss Anihan Coronation event, bazaars and live music.
