Nigeria's capital city, Abuja was founded as a place for ethnic diversity in the 1970s and most of its significant construction took place in the 1980's. This followed the Biafran War when a decision was reached to move the capital city from Lagos. Visitors will find the city to be quiet and clean, benefitting from a good electricity supply, unlike many other parts of the country. As a purpose-built city, it benefits from excellent road communications and modern architecture, but the natural scenery is still unspoiled with rolling terrain, adding to Abjua's beauty.
Major attractions include the city's parks, the National Mosque and Aso Rock. In terms of culture, there are several museums, including the Currency Museum of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nike Art Gallery. Shoppers will appreciate the Wuse Market and Jabi Lake Mall which has pretty much everything to buy including fresh food, clothes, music and electrical items. The city celebrates many annual events and festivals such as the Durbar celebrations with colourful parades through the city, the Africa Fashion and Cultural Week and a unique dog show, which is a must-see for animal lovers.
Whatever the reason for visiting Abuja, there are some unique attractions that help visitors experience Nigerian culture and ways of life as well as the peace of local nature.
Visit Abuja National Mosque
In addition to being a beautiful building, this magnificent structure exudes serenity. As one of the city's great attractions, it definitely worth a visit and covers a wide area with lots of shops nearby.
Shop at a Nigerian mall
The Jabi Lake Mall is a true example of Nigerian shopping with a lovely interior and wonderful stores. Whether window shopping or actually buying, visitors can eat at the mall too with lovely views of the lake. There's also a cinema!
Enjoy tranquil bodies of water
Jabi Lake is great for picnics and evening walks and there are lovely views over the water. Usman Dam makes for a great day trip to get away from the city and has places to have a barbeque and just relax.
Visitors to Abuja won't be disappointed when it comes to cultural and entertaining events and festivals that take place every year.
Durbar celebrations. Durbar celebrations take place during the Muslim Id-el-Fitri and ID-el-Kabir holidays with colourful parades, dancing and entertainment in the squares of towns in Northern Nigeria, including Abuja.
Dog Show. This lovely dog show is the first of its kind in the city. It takes place in Riverplate park and is an opportunity to see all kinds of dogs and their owners looking their best with competitions and general fun and entertainment.
Africa Fashion and Cultural Week. This is the largest Get-together of ethnic models, designers, artists, authors and basically everyone involved in the arts and fashion world. This event showcases local culture and diversity with pride.
