Cheap Flights To Tangier

The ancient city of Tangier, Morocco, is where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Steeped in history, it was first founded in the fifth century B.C. and through the centuries has been conquered by many different colonial powers from the Byzantines to the Portuguese. In more recent times, it was a hotbed of spies, writers and international intrigue as it had international status and didn't officially become part of Morocco until 1956. The result of this heady mix is a city rich in secrets and stories, with surprises around every turn. In its history, its sights and its food you will find a city like no other.

Vibrant yearly events like the International Summer Carnival and Tanjazz (jazz) festival make for excellent times to visit.

Things To Do

It can be difficult to know where to start in a city as vibrant as Tangier. With so much to take in, a little help can be a welcome thing when exploring. Local knowledge always comes in handy when getting to know this city. With fascinating buildings and museums, and a vital local culture and cuisine, it will be sure to reward your efforts.

  • Take a Tour

There are many organised tours in Tangier, and they can be a great way to get to know the city better. From one-day walking tours around the charming Old Town to more elaborate multi-day affairs -- there are tours based around food, culture and even getting on a quad bike or a camel to take in the great outdoors. An excellent way to get the most out of the city.

  • Soak up the Culture

The city has been a haven for artists and writers over the years, and they've left their mark. From traditional arts to photographic histories, there is a wide range of galleries and museums to fascinate the visitor. Take in traditional mosaics at the Museum of Moroccan Arts and see the story of the city in photographs at the Foundation Lorin in the ancient Jewish quarter. For something a little different, the lavishly restored American Legation is a must-see.

  • Food and Drink

Moroccan cuisine is globally renowned, and with Tangier's due to its colonial past and relatively close proximity to Europe, the local food is an amazing mix of styles and flavours. While you can get a great flavour of this from one of the thousands of restaurants (locals recommend Le Saveur de Poisson, or try Cafe Hafa where the Rolling Stones used to hang out!), try a local cookery course for a more hands-on experience.

Calendar Of Events

As you'd expect for somewhere so lively, there's always something going on in Tangier. A visit at any time of year is bound to throw up an event of interest.

  • The Tanjazz festival. Every September, a mix of amateur and local musicians take to the stage for a three-day music festival; with music and dance workshops and lessons this is a great way to get involved in the city's cultural life.

  • International Summer Carnival. Every June the city comes alive in a riotous celebration of local colour, parades, music and dancing making an unforgettable spectacle.

  • Tamiza Festival. For a more indigenous flavour, this festival promotes traditional Amazigh Berber culture through literature, music and dance. An insight into the older Morocco.
