The charming capital of the Balkan state of Montenegro, Podgorica is a fantastically situated city with much to tempt any traveller; from its balmy Mediterranean climate to its rich history, its mix of architecture to its convenient location for many of Montenegro's most beautiful resorts, there are any amount of reasons to visit the Montenegrin capital.
There's been a settlement here since the Iron Age due to the favourable aspects of the land (such as it being the only flat pieces of land in the country). The name first came into use in 1326, and the city has a long and storied history tied to the turbulent past of the Balkans. Different wars have left their mark on the city, from the legacy of being part of the Ottoman Empire to the rebuilding after the devastation of World War Two. What stands today is a modern city with a firm grasp of the past.
With a rich heritage, there's always a lot to do in Podgorica. Marvel at architecture old and new, enrich your mind with the lessons of history or invigorate your body in the countryside. It's well worth a visit.
There's plenty to occupy any traveller in Podgorica. Whether you're a fitness fan or prefer your pleasures a little more sedate, the city and surrounding area has something to offer.
Surrounded by stunning scenery, there are plenty of opportunities to get out there and test yourself. There are many organised hiking and horse riding tours through the surrounding countryside, and the brave may wish to test their nerve on the horse riding Mountain Tour. For those who prefer something gentler, local sights of great beauty include The Moraca River with its stunning canyon and the Niagara Waterfall.
After all that exertion you've earned the chance to relax. Podgorica is in the heart of wine-making country, and no trip's complete without sampling some of the local varieties. The 13 Jul-Plantaze Vineyard is open to the public, and the Montenegro Wonders tour includes a wine tasting on its interesting itinerary. Culture and wine meet at the Art and Wine House: a combination of gallery and wine bar.
The city's uniqueness lies in part in its mix of architecture. Turkish and Western, ancient and modern -- there are any number of wonders to behold. From ancient ruins at Duklja to the strikingly modern Millennium Bridge, the only thing to do is look around and take it all in.
There are any number of annual events in Podgorica to entertain visitors all year around.
Ex Yu Fest. One for the cinema fans, this is a film festival held every February with special emphasis on local cinema.
Podgorica's Cultural Summer. An annual summer-long event, as the city gives itself over to films, music, theatre and books in a wide variety of events. A culture vulture's dream.
New Year's ever. They take their New Years' seriously in Montenegro, and the city square hosts a three-day party to mark the turning of the year. A must visit for true local flavour.
