From the city centre to the jungles of Borneo, the historical forts and buildings, churches and mosques there is never a dull moment while on holiday here. Fancy an adventure sport or activity? Don't worry, you'll be spoilt for choice with water and river sports, beaches and waterfalls. If you had a more laid-back, relaxing holiday in mind then Kuching can also be your idyllic location.
The city's central hub is easy to enjoy on foot or by sampan. The area is compact and dotted with restaurants serving tasty Malaysian cuisine such as "deer meat and jungle fern" and "tuak" (rice wine). It is also here where you will find the city's Chinese temples, colonial buildings and the Sarawak Museum. Accommodation in the city varies from budget hotels like the Transit Point and Homestay hotels to the Hilton and spa resorts like the Damai Beach Resort.
The Great Orangutan Project has been active in the region for several years. It is open to the public, but volunteers are equally welcome to contribute to the project in several ways. There are numerous safari trips to the Iban and Bidayuh Longhouses, the Longhouses being home to the two main tribes of Kuching, the Sea Dayaks and Land Dayaks who make up the ethnic community in the region. There are around 4500 longhouses in Sarawak and up to a 100 families may share one building!
The promenade offers awe-inspiring views of 19th century architecture and the most renowned landmarks in the city. One such landmark is Fort Margherita which was historically built to protect the city from pirates, in a time where the city was not the peaceful paradise it is now. The Astana is the former palace of the White Rajahs, or Brooke family, who ruled Sarawak from 1841 to 1946.
For those who love indoor, outdoor and adventure sports make sure you pay a visit to Sports Planet and the Lea Sports Centre, where you can buy all your favourite gear. The busy Sentosa Sports Centre provides a variety of sporting entertainment including badminton and futsal, an indoor version of football. For a further taste of adventure, kayak trips can be enjoyed in the nearby village of Kampong Bengoh.
Children of all ages will love the Sinar Serapi Eco Theme Park Resort which is situated 14 km from the city centre. The whole family can have some fun with the kayaks, boat rides and paddle boats. There's also a children's fun pool with a bubbling water-maze and water-slide to keep everyone busy.
