The capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo, or Tana as it's known locally, is an inspired choice for holidays. Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island and it is often called the eighth continent thanks to its unique ecology and wildlife. Its bustling capital is filled with exciting attractions and it's also the ideal base from which to discover Madagascar's many treasures.
The Madagascan capital is located in the Central Highlands within easy reach of beautiful beaches that line the Indian Ocean coast, neighbouring cities like Toamasina and the island's interior. The city was founded from 1610 to around 1625 when the Merina people lead by King Andrianjaka overcame the local people and declared it their capital. The built a fortified dwelling and palace complex known as a 'rova'. Today, the 17th-century Rova of Antananarivo is one of the city's most popular attractions.
Visitors come from all over the world to see the famous lemurs and other Madagascan wildlife and the city's Tsimbazaza Zoo is an excellent starting point. Nature lovers will love being close to Parc de Tsarasaotra, a wetland region that's home to thousands of bird including many endangered species while those with a penchant for the past will enjoy excursions to the sacred hill of Ambohimanga and the magnificent pink Andafiavaratra Palace museum.
Whether you're looking for vibrant markets and colonial architecture, delightful open spaces, iconic wildlife or historical attractions, you'll find them in Tana.
The Rova of Antananarivo is the most famous landmark in the city and it occupies the highest hilltop. Once you've taken in the fabulous views, explore the fortified complex taking note of the carved gateposts and royal tombs. Alternatively, spend the day in the former royal palace, the Musee Andafivaratra. Exhibits include crown jewels and a royal throne.
A beautiful man-made heart-shaped lake in the city centre, Lac Anosy is particularly stunning during the month of October then the jacaranda trees on its shores are in bloom. See the Monument aux Morts, a golden angel statue and French WWI Memorial or take a walk around the lake to spot birds like the White Cattle Egret. It's best to limit visits to daylight hours or appreciate the beauty of Lac Anosy from the viewpoints in the Haute-Ville neighbourhood.
Lemurs, aye aye, giant rats and countless bird species make Madagascar a haven for nature lovers. See the lemurs at Lemur Land or make Antananarivo your base for outings to nature reserves like Parc de Tsarasaotra. The privately- managed park is located in the city's industrial zone and centred on Lake Alarobia. Tickets can be purchased at Tana Water Front.
