As a major tourist destination in Kenya, Mombasa lies on the coast and has beautiful sun-drenched beaches. It's a welcoming city with diverse languages, religions and cultures as well as top-class hotels and a tropical climate throughout the year. The Swahilis founded the city in ancient times and ruled from the 1st to the 5th century. It's also been under Portuguese, Arab and British rule. Today's city has all the hallmarks of its past with ruins like the Fort Jesus, an historic Old Town and an interesting blend of Portuguese and Islamic buildings. Many visitors describe the city as a captivating blend of Indian, Arabian and Africain cultures and traditions in a contemporary and cosmopolitan setting. Like many African towns and cities, there is a prominent Muslim population and the call to prayer rings out at certain times of the day. A diversity of marine life and outdoor spaces prevail and visitors will love the Mombasa Marine National Park as well as the public Bamburi and Nyali beaches. The Wild Waters is an excellent water park for cooling off in hot weather and ideal for children. Events such as the city's Triathlon, Carnival and New Year's Day celebrations help to make it a special place.
