For The History and Culture Enthusiasts

Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000, Shuri Castle is a fine testament to Rykyu culture and history. Built on sacred ground and at the summit of Shuri hill, this outstanding castle is surrounded by stunning gardens, cobblestone walkways and breathtaking vistas. The southern region is home to Shikinaen, a magnificent palace and gardens and the second home to the royal family during the Ryukyu period. Chinese officials visiting the royal family would be accommodated and entertained here. The gardens are spectacular and in 2000 this outstanding venue became a UNESCO World heritage site.

For The Beach Lovers

The stunning Kabira Bay on Ishigaki Island has to be seen to be truly appreciated. Bathe in the Turquoise waters and marvel at the star shaped sand known as hoshizuna. Additionally, this beautiful isle is renowned for the most succulent and tasty beef in the region.

For The Foodies

Opened in 2015, more than twenty stalls line the Kokusai Dori, a large and sprawling market offering culinary delights. Local, authentic dishes made only from Okinawan ingredients entice passing visitors. Alternatively, sample the dishes at Ufuya, a century-old traditional home cum restaurant and the birthplace of Ufuya's proprietor. Choose from sumptuous, traditional Okinawan dishes made from the finest ingredients, or, on the other hand, why not sample soba? A mouth watering delight made from Agu pork. After your meal, take a leisurely stroll around Ufuya's beautiful gardens and relax to the sound of the tranquil waterfalls. The Makishi Public Market or the Kitchen of Okinawa as it is more commonly known, has been trading local delicacies and fresh food for more than 60 years. The second floor of the market serves as a dining hall, where shoppers can enjoy prepared dishes made from the fresh ingredients sold in the marketplace.

For The Shopaholics

The three-hundred-year-old Tsuboya Yachimun Street is home to some of the finest and most famous pottery workshops. Delight in American culture at the Mihama American Village, a large mall type shopping centre with a distinctly west-coast flavour. A host of US brand stores flank the mall, nonetheless, for those wishing to acquire souvenirs, traditional and modern Okinawan shops can also be found.

For The Energetic

Murasaki Mura is a fun-themed entertainment park in the central region of the district. Immerse yourself in Okinawan culture and learn karate from the finest teachers. Alternatively, learn the traditional craft of Ryukyu glass making or Okinawan cookery.
