Turin is a beautiful, historic city in the north of Italy and the heart of the Piedmont region. Known for its traditional buildings and love of culture, it is a must-see destination for visitors to Italy, particularly as it is often overshadowed by Rome and Venice.
People have lived in the area since 218 B.C., and around the 1st century B.C. the city was properly founded by the Romans. As with many Italian cities, it's still possible to see Roman ruins at every turn. Particular highlights are the incredibly well-preserved Porta Palatina, a large Roman gate and the Manica Nuova remains of a theatre. History buffs will love to take a tour around the various historical sights to breathe in the atmosphere that echoes 2,000 years of civilisation. Another stunning place to visit is the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy: a series of baroque palaces built in the 1500s and declared a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1997.
However, much of the city has had a modern update, with plenty of shopping centres, sports stadiums and cinemas. Turin is a haven for foodies, thanks to its wide variety of tasty Italian restaurants selling local delicacies such as pizza al padellino. There are also plenty of fun and exciting events for visitors to attend, from the famous International Book Fair to the Kappa FuturFestival that's home to Italy's techno music scene.
Turin is home to hundreds of wonderful historic buildings spanning a period of thousands of years as well as once-in-a-lifetime museum experiences.
The Egyptian Museum
This is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Egyptian artefacts in the world. In particular, it houses a mesmerising collection of Egyptian art.
Turin's star attraction
No visit to the city is completed without a trip to see The Shroud of Turin, one of the most recognisable items in the world. Housed in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, this remains one of the city's most popular attractions.
Fascinating ruins
The Roman ruins of The Porta Palatina and The Manica Nuova are a great way to learn about the history of the area, and, in turn, the history of Italy in general.
Thanks to its reputation as the cultural centre of the north of Italy, Turin is a hub for musical, artistic and sporting events.
Football games at the Allianz Stadium. Any football fan couldn't miss seeing Juventus play on their home ground. Football in Italy is a national passion, and Juventus games are an opportunity to see this famous team play at home.
International Book Fair. This event is held every May and is the largest book fair in Europe. Each year has a 'special guest' theme that features work from anything from German to Arabian literature -- a dream for bookworms.
Kappa FuturFestival. This techno festival features artists such as Nina Kraviz and Carl Cox, who perform over a weekend that is packed full of live music and glitzy after parties.
