Cheap Flights To Pisa

This Italian town in Tuscany needs no introduction. The leaning tower of Pisa is one of the most recognised landmarks in the world, yet it's easy to forget that city was also a one-time Maritime power to be reckoned with. Its former glory days attracted some of the best thinkers of the time such as Galileo Galilei and celebrated mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci.

The most featured travel guide destination is Piazza dei Miracoli, which has been listed as UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site since 1987. However, you should not restrict yourself to one place. Set in the beautiful backdrop of the colourful Tuscan region, Pisa boasts its lively cafe and bar culture, tasteful Renaissance piazzas, and Romanesque architecture, where vibrant street life is still dominated by locals, rather than by tourists.

June in Pisa is the month of celebration. The city transforms into the breathtaking luminescent spectacle on the night of Luminara di San Ranieri, while Gioco Del Ponto, or battle on the bridge, will send you back to 16th century. Through out the year, the city invites its guests to discover the cultural scene through galleries, concerts, and occasional poetry readings.

Things To Do

The city's main attractions are all clustered in the 'field of miracles' which are indeed the miracles of the Italian architecture.

  • Photo opportunity

The Tower of Pisa will forever be immortalised in the scores of comical photographic attempts to support the leaning tower, yet the beautiful Romanesque white marble facade on the outside, it's equally impressive on the inside. Landmark was reopened to the public in 2001 after a decade construction works to arrest the increasing tilt. Only 294 steps to the top open a beautiful panorama of the town.

  • The Signature of Power

The Duomo stands in the field of miracles, right next to the leaning tower. The cathedral is the symbol of Pisan Romanesque architecture. Designed in beginning of 17th century, the Duomo is the testament of city's one-time maritime power, with strong Byzantine and mostly Islamic components in its design.

  • Monument build on the Holy dirt

Camposanto is an ancient monumental graveyard and a final resting place for Pisa's noblemen. The ancient tradition would suggest that the graveyard must be built on dirt carried back from the Holy Land. Within the cloister, you'll discover the sarcophaguses and ancient Roman graves, while beneath you'll find the gallery of Italy's most prominent painters.

Calendar Of Events

June in Pisa is the busiest month of the year when the city transforms into the movable feast celebrating the cities glorious historical and cultural past.

  • La Luminara is an impressive candle light and firework show taking place on the 16th June. For this celebration, the town is illuminated with more than 70,000 'lumini' along the river and Piazza Miracoli.

  • Regatta for San Ranieri takes place on 17th June, the day of San Ranieri, the patron saint. In the remembrance of its nautical tradition, the city welcomes visitors to enjoy the race on the river Arno.

  • Gioco Del Ponto or battle on the bridge is a five stage theatrical medieval battle taking place on the last Sunday of June. The popularity with locals and tourists, Gioco became the social phenomena.
