Cheap Flights To Shannon

Flights here open up the whole of the stunning Shannon region of South West Ireland to the traveller; the airport serves the whole area of Counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary containing some of Ireland's loveliest countryside.

The town of Shannon itself is a great base to explore this superb jewel of the Irish environment. Based on the broad river after which the town names itself, it's a modern town that's well served with transport links to help you explore the region. Ireland's mild coastal climate means you're unlikely to ever find it too unpleasant to venture out, though you may want to bring an umbrella. You are sure to feel very welcome in what is possibly the most hospitable country on Earth.

Things To Do

There's plenty to do in *Shannon to ensure an experience that includes the famous Irish hospitality, intriguing stories and historical sites and, of course, the glorious local countryside.

  • The riches of history

This is an area which acknowledges its past; from the ancient traditions of the Celts through to medieval times -- there are many historical sites of interest. Try the wonderfully preserved 15th-century Bunratty Castle or the even older St John's Castle, where history comes alive in its cutting-edge visitor's centre. Limerick also has the stunning St Mary's cathedral. For something older, the Grange Stone circle dates back to at least 2000 B.C..

  • Get outdoors

When you're surrounded by countryside as lovely as this, it's a waste not to get out there and enjoy the scenery. Get windswept on the wild and desolate Cliffs of Moher, walk by beautiful Lough Gur, where there's evidence of 6,000 years of human habitation, or for something a little more strenuous, hit the bike trails of the Ballyhoura forest.

  • Get back indoors

After all that tramping round the countryside you'll have worked up both a hunger and a thirst. Luckily for you, you're in Ireland, where good food and drink are second nature! The area is well served for bars: Shannon Knights bar is highly thought of by locals, and Gallagher's in Bunratty serves amazing local seafood and traditional Irish cuisine, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With hundreds of bars and restaurants locally, you're spoiled for choice.

Calendar Of Events

Shannon is in a lively area and there's always something going on. Quintessentially Irish events and celebrations of the area's traditions and history result in festivals which you simply couldn't imagine happening anywhere else.

  • Lughnasa Festival. This festival based around the Celtic God Lugh, the God of Arts and Crafts, takes place every August and is a rich mix of fascinating historical talks and events detailing Ireland's past.

  • St Patrick's Day. The most Irish of all celebrations. You may think you've celebrated St Patrick's day, but unless you've done it on the Emerald Isle itself, it was a pale imitation.

  • Limerick Riverfest. A truly unique occasion based on the River Shannon. Three days of food, music, comedy, fashion and water-sports each May. A lively and unusual event.
