One of the most populated islands in the Indonesian archipelago, Flores is considered to be one of the most beautiful and magnificent regions in the world. Translated, the Island's name means 'Cape of Flowers' and was so named due to the abundance of Delonix regia trees in the region and its glorious, flamboyant red flowers. Portuguese missionaries first settled in the area circa the 16th century, when António de Abreu led an expedition through the Sunda Islands. The Portuguese influence is still clearly evident in the language and culture of its inhabitants.
The island enjoys a monsoon climate, although the north of the island is far dryer during the monsoon period and entices sun-hungry visitors to laze the days away on one of the many beautiful beaches. Similarly, those with a thirst to discover unique wildlife will be delighted by the Komodo dragons. Unique to the island, these impressive reptiles cannot be spotted anywhere else in the world. The island also hosts some of the most impressive and colourful festivals. Visit in August, when one of the most important festivals of the year is hosted: The Festival of the Holy Ghost. The event is held in honour of the Emperor and the towns and cities are decorated with floral garlands and festival goers dance in the streets.
A visit to Flores would not be complete without an exploration of the region's stunning wildlife, flora and many natural wonders. Alternatively, visit one of the many beautiful beaches before dining on traditional cuisine.
See the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat: the Komodo National Park. These amazing mammals can only be found on the island and roam freely around the park.
The island's national park is also bursting with coral reef. The waters are ideal for snorkelling and in addition to the amazing reefs, snorkelers will also spot a plethora of marine life.
Those who appreciate the beach will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the island's selection -- from white sandy beaches to purple pebble beaches, each surrounded by stunning scenery. Take a short boat ride to Kanawa Island with its turquoise waters and powder white sand beaches.
The culturally rich region of Flores has been celebrating the same annual festivals for generations and each is colourful with much pomp and ceremony. The Islanders are particularly friendly and positively encourage visitors to participate.
The Festival of the Holy Ghost. Held every August, the Festival of the Holy Ghost celebrates and is held in honour of the Emperor. The island is decorated with garlands and the locals parade through the streets. The event is also marked with ethnic dancing and local cuisine.
Senhor dos Passos. The Festival of Senhor dos Passos is hosted on Good Friday when processions march through the streets. Participants wear traditional costume and the day ends with a street feast.
The Emigrants Festival. As its name suggests, the Emigrants Festival marks the diversity of the island and festival goers literally party in the streets until the wee hours. Live music and competitions are also featured. The event takes place the second weekend in July.
