Rajkot lies in Gujarat, Western India, and it was founded in the 16th century by the Jadeja Rajputs, who governed until independence. The city is on the banks of the Aji River and boasts splendid architecture as well as being a centre for industry within the region. Gandhiji spent part of his early life in the city and his former home is now an interesting museum. The city is also well-known for its handicrafts and textiles and, by complete contrast, traditional sweets as well as Indian folk dancing!
The old city lies to the east of the newer central area and is full of character, with typically narrow streets, street sellers and markets at every turn. It's well worth spending a day or half day there to soak in the atmosphere. Shri Ramakrishna Ashrama is one of the favourite places to visit and is a peaceful temple -- one of several in the city. Visitors can get back to nature by visiting the Rampara Wildlife Sanctuary, which is offered as a day trip. Also, families will enjoy the fun of the Funworld theme park. When it comes to celebrating, the people of Rajkot do this so well with a 9-day spiritual Navaratri Festival in the autumn, the Modhera Dance Festival in January and the spectacular 5-day Janmashtami Festival in July/August.
Rajkot has some real gems to explore and places to see as well as family-packed outdoor fun including the city's much-loved theme park.
Serene temples
Shri Ramakrishna Ashrama is peaceful and beautiful and is a place where you can meditate and connect with God. Another lovely temple is Ishwariya Temple, which also features large green gardens and a lake.
Communicate with nature
Rampara Wildlife Sanctuary is 60km from Rajkot but it's well worth the visit to see the mammoth antelopes, bulls, foxes, hyena and more animals. Aji Dam Garden in the city is a nice cool location and a lovely place for photos.
Fun at a theme park
Funworld Rajkot offers different rides, food stalls and great play opportunities for children. For those who love all the fun of the fair, this is a must-visit attraction.
Like many cities in India, Rajkot is no slacker when it comes to festivals, events and celebrations. Many have a spiritual or religious theme but there are also plenty of cultural events to enjoy.
Navaratri Festival. This autumn festival is celebrated over a 9-day period in honour of the association with Shakti's holy power. The streets are filled with dancing and colourful outfits, which both young and old will enjoy.
Modhera Dance Festival. Every January, this lively dance festival takes place at the Modherasun Temple. Wonderful dances represent the multicultural traditions of the region.
Janmashtami Festival. In July or August, this 5-day festival takes place at the city's race course and features lots of different stores selling local merchandise, rides and other activities. It's extremely popular with local people.
