Cheap Flights To Mangalore

Mangalore is a major port city in India's Karnataka state and is an important staging point for ships sailing along the Malabar Coast. It sits on the estuaries of the majestic Netravathi and Gurupur Rivers by the Arabian Sea and has been an important port for international trading since the 6th century. Benefitting from a tropical climate, the city handles much of India's coffee and cashew nut exporting. In the past, it has been ruled by several dominant powers, including the Portuguese at one time. In 1799, the city was annexed by the British and remained part of the Madras Presidency until Inda gained independence in 1947.

Set against a backdrop of rolling hills, coconut trees and freshwater streams, a particular feature of Mangalore is its red-clay tiled buildings, which add more than a splash of colour to the landscape. There are also many temples and sacred and religious sites for visitors to enjoy such as the tranquil Kudroli Gokarnath Temple. Outdoors are lovely beaches including Tannirbhavi Beach and Panambur Beach. Sammilan Shetty's Butterfly Park makes for a fascinating day out too.

Mangalore hosts annual events and festivals for everyone throughout the year. For example, the ATTI Monsoon Food Festival from mid-July to August, the Monsoon Mela in late August and the Bharath Mall International Film Festival in late April.

Things To Do

Mangalore features a bustling seaside port but, by complete contrast, there are also quiet temples and tranquil, clean beaches where visitors can relax and be in tune with spirituality and nature.

  • Serene temples
The city has many temples and two of the best are the Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, which is clean, peaceful and beautiful, as well as the Kadri Manjunath Temple, which is full of old-world charm

  • Clean, quiet beaches
Tannirbhavi beach is a very clean spot where the sea rolls onto the sands and there are a few food stalls for refreshments. Panambur Beach is also calm and clean and the ideal place for friends and families to gather.

  • Sammilan Shetty's Butterfly Park
In this beautiful butterfly garden, Sammilan Shetty has conserved different species of butterfly and presents information on the various species to educate and entertain visitors.

Calendar Of Events

Mangalore annual events and festivals are a chance to delve into local culture and traditions: from food to merchandise, music and film. Getting involved is an experience not to be missed!

  • AATI Monoon Food Festival. From mid-July to August in the city, the AATI Monoon Food Festival features dishes from the area and is a chance to relish many authentic homemade recipes from the city.

  • Monsoon Mela. In late August, this festival provides an opportunity for small vendors to showcase their products. Also, there's live music to entertain visitors.

  • International Film Festival. At the end of April, this festival is organised by students of the Nitte Institute of Communication and aims to feature award-winning and critically acclaimed films from across the world at Bharath Cinemas.
