On the banks of the Gmoti River, Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. It's been a historically important city for many centuries, featuring at the very centre of North Indian culture. The city became the seat of the Nawabs of Avadh, who pioneered many early culinary, artistic and musical traditions. Indeed, many have heard of the city's elaborate cuisine as well as its famous shadow work embroidery upon fine muslin cloth. Furthermore, the city's reputation as a hub of culture, fine living and superb food continues to thrive to this day.
Featuring wonderful architecture from the British Raj era, the city has two magnificent mausoleums, Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara. Visitors who are looking to immerse themselves in the city's history will find several important museums such as the British Residency and The State Museum. Strolling around the city centre reveals wide boulevards, grand monuments and peaceful parks and gardens. Local people welcome travellers and the numerous annual events and festivals are a testimony to this. In November-December, the Lucknow festival celebrates local culture and everyone is welcome. Holi in early March and Divali in Mid-October are also very important events with big celebrations in the city itself and right across India.
Lucknow is a wonderful centre of history, art, cooking, dance, culture and music and is famous right across Northern India for its wide array of attractions.
Wonderful mausoleums
Don't miss Bara Imambara, a large, impressive tomb dating back to 1783. Featuring an entertaining labyrinth, it's easy to spend a good few hours wandering around this magnificent example of Mughal architecture. Chhota Imambara, built in 1837, is another impressive mausoleum nearby.
Fascinating museums
The British Residency is a must-see museum depicting the great history of Indian bravery and battles for freedom. Another important museum for Indian history is the 1857 Memorial Museum, while The State Museum, inside the city's Zoo, has exhibits from the Maurya and Kushan dynasties.
Luscious parks
Take time out in Janeshwar Mishra Park, a big open space with lush greenery, beautiful trees and fountains. Dr Ambedkar Park is possibly the city's biggest park and features unique stonework, making it an unmissable attraction in the city.
The city celebrates festivals with great fanfare and enthusiasm and everyone gets involved, creating a convivial atmosphere at different times of the year.
Holi: This March festival is celebrated right across India with much enjoyment and enthusiasm and the city's residents and visitors celebrate Holi with the same gusto. Sweets and special dishes are just a part of the many delights to enjoy!
Diwali: Another important Indian festival celebrated in Lucknow is Diwali. Every October, residents light little lamps outside their homes and firework displays illuminate the city skies, painting a truly sparkling picture.
Lucknow Festival: During November and December, this festival celebrates the city's unique and vibrant culture over ten days. This marvellous festival sees the whole city come alive with happy celebrations.
