In the southeast of Greece -- a Greek Island located in the Aegean -- Santorini belongs to the Cyclades group of Islands and is home to more than 15,000 inhabitants. This island, in particular, is what remains of a volcanic caldera and is the site of the largest volcanic eruption ever recorded more than 3,500 years ago. The island's warm, sunny and temperate climate, in addition to its diverse and often colourful beaches, entice sun lovers and water sports enthusiasts alike. Moreover, this beautiful island is a haven for wildlife and is hailed for its authentic and traditional cuisine.
Like many of the Greek Islands, Santorini has retained much of its individual charm and character and the iconic whitewashed buildings and blue rooftops provide the picturesque setting in which visitors return to again and again. The island is also in permanent festival spirit, enticing both the locals and visitors from further afield to participate in the flamboyant and culturally rich celebrations. Santorini Jazz Festival is a firm favourite with visitors and draws crowds from all over the world. The event is held in July and spans three days. Artists from Greece and beyond perform for festival goers and the sounds of Jazz and blues music can be heard all over the island.
Irrespective of your interests, the truly unique destination of Santorini boasts a myriad of attractions from dining in the finest tavernas to shopping in one of the many markets, dancing the night away in the clubs or admiring spectacular flora and fauna.
Selene offers an exceptional dining experience in lovely and traditional surroundings. The restaurant's award-winning chef offers a menu of freshly caught fish and seafood, aubergine stuffed with oxtails, pan fried hake with a garlic and walnut sauce and a sumptuous cappuccino pudding.
Visit the colourful market in Oia, crammed with ethnic and handcrafted jewellery, clothing, pottery and souvenirs. Alternatively, head to Fira's outstanding market, with one-of-a-kind boutiques and exclusive shops.
Spend the day at Red Beach, one of the most famous of the island's beaches. Flanked by red and black volcanic rocks, this beautiful beach is small and secluded, providing the perfect relaxing beach experience.
Santorini is renowned for its festival spirit, particularly when it comes to cultural and religious festivals. Grand parades and traditional regalia delight visitors and the family friendly islanders ensure that all events are suitable for children.
Santorini Jazz Festival. The Jazz Festival is hosted in Kamari and is held in July. The event spans three days and artists from the island, the mainland and further afield gather to entertain festival goers. Unknown performers are invited to compete and gain support from more established, seasoned performers.
