This is a city that suffered greatly during the conflicts of the 20th century, so, with one or two notable exceptions, its architecture tends more towards the modern than the ancient. It has, however, succeeded in reinventing itself into a contemporary and vibrant city with an exciting cultural and night life and a fast-developing gastronomic edge. A tour through the city's museums and galleries soon reminds you that since 1714, the royal family of Hanover has been ruling the United Kingdom! The city's history, though, predates this. It started life as a village of ferrymen and fishermen in the medieval period. Today it's also noted for its two main annual events: the Industrial Technology Trade Fair and the CeBit Computer Expo, both of which attract tens of thousands of delegates.
With its wealth of green areas and urban forests, the flat landscape of Hanover is always enjoyable to wander through whatever the season. The River Leine winds its way across the centre with waterside walks to enjoy, while the man-made Lake Masch provides plenty of recreational opportunities.
The Baroque Gardens of Herrenhausen were copied from Versailles in the 17th century and put on a beautiful display right through the year. You can also enjoy magnificent fountains, a museum and the shimmering Grotto of Niki de Saint Phalle.
An architectural mix
Although badly damaged during the Second World War, the Altes Rathaus, or Town Hall, has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Parts date back to the 15th century while other parts reflect Romanesque and Gothic influences. The inside contains a fascinating collection of art and artefacts.
The highly rated Erlebnis Zoo has seven habitat-like environments for its animals, from the Zambezi Africa section with rhinos, lions and zebras to the Yukon Bay of Canada with seals and polar bears. There are also children's playgrounds and a daily programme of shows.
Hanover's calendar is packed full of seasonal festivals and cultural events from awe-inspiring fireworks to the historic tradition of marksmen practising their skills with bows and arrows. Colourful kites, quirky inventions and, of course, Christmas are all celebrated in the city.
International Fireworks Competitions. The Hanoverians love their fireworks. On six Saturdays spread throughout late Spring and Summer, several nations come together to put on their best displays accompanied by music. The event takes place in the pretty Herrenhausen Gardens.
Masala World Beat Festival. May sees Hanover come alive with this multicultural music event held in the Hannover Pavilion. Jazz, Salsa, Tango and Funk are just some of the music genres on offer at these free concerts.
Schutzenfest or Marksmen's Fair. This has been taking place since the 16th century. Marksmen from around the world and over 100 bands march through the city streets which are lined with huge beer tents. A highlight of the fun is the enormous Steiger Ferris Wheel.
