The historic city of Norwich is ideal for family holidays, day trips or weekend breaks. There's something to appeal to everyone with lots of outdoors activities, great shopping and entertainment and dozens of notable landmarks like its two famous cathedrals, Norwich Castle, and the 14th-century Cow Tower.
The city lies on the banks of the River Wensum in the heart of East Anglia and just 100 miles north of London. It's the county town of Norfolk and it is one of the oldest cities in England. The city has a truly unique history, it has been the site of a Roman settlement and was also settled by the Anglo-Saxons from the 7th to 9th Century. It was raided by Vikings in 1004 A.D and, at the time of the Norman Conquest, it was one of the country's biggest cities.
Today, it's a friendly, cosmopolitan city that attracts visitors from the UK and abroad. Those who enjoy outdoor activities will love being close to the Norfolk Broads and the North Norfolk Coast while music lovers can take part in annual events like the Norfolk and Norwich Music Festival. It's a cultural hotspot and was the first UNESCO City of Literature in England. Visit the Forum, one of the city's newer landmarks and home to the municipal library or the outstanding Sainsbury's Centre for Visual Arts.
The city appeals to families who want parks, open spaces and lots of activities. However, it's also a great choice for couples, singles and groups of friends who are interested in everything from historic landmarks and magical scenery to the city's vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene.
The construction of Norwich Cathedral began in 1096 and it was consecrated in 1278. It's mainly built from Caen stone from Normandy with a core of local Norfolk flint and medieval additions in Northamptonshire stone. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist was built from 1884 to 1910. It's an excellent illustration of revival architecture and is built in a pure form of the 13th-century Decorated Early English style.
The beautiful Norfolk Broads, a region of scenic canals and waterways, is right on your doorstep while the coastal resort of Great Yarmouth is just a short drive from the city centre. Kids will love trying the zip lines and activities at Bewilderwood and spacious parks like Catton Park and Eaton Park are easy to reach.
Shopping centres like Castlefield and Castle Mall ensure that retail fans are well-catered for. The city once had more pubs per square mile than any other town in England - try the Golden Mile west of the city centre for lively bars and music venues.
Norwich and Norfolk Festival: Jam-packed with music, dance and theatre at venues throughout the city each May.
Lord Mayor's Celebration: A series of colourful processions, parades and fireworks in August.
CAMRA Beer Festival: A fun beer-lovers delight that takes place in October.
