It is the capital city of the South American country of El Salvador and is nestled in a valley bordering the Balsam Mountain Range, the Boquerón Volcano crater and tropical national parks.
The city was founded in 1525 by the Spanish, and the Latin influence they left can be felt everywhere, especially the architecture, as exemplified by the Basilica Sagrado Corazon and Liberty Square.
There are plenty of calendar events in this culturally vibrant city such as the San Miguel Carnival, the Balls of Fire Festival and the All Saints and Souls Day religious feast.
If you want to experience something a bit different, you can visit Lake Ilopango, which fills an extinct volcano crater, and have fun with some watersports, boat rides or you can simply enjoy a relaxing swim.

  A trip to El Boqueron Park is a must for more adventurous travellers. This park sits at the top of the San Salvador Volcano at a height of 5,905 feet. The main attraction is a three-mile-wide crater and you can also see plenty of wildlife such as deer, foxes and armadillos.

• Watersports with a twist
  Ever thought of taking a jet-ski ride in a volcanic crater filled with water? That's exactly what you can do at Lake Ilopongo. This scenic lake measures 28 square miles and is not far from the city centre.

• For the more cultured traveller
  San Salvador retained the Latin style of architecture and you can soak it all up at the National Palace, El Rosario Church and the Aztec ruins at Joya de Ceren Archaeological Park.

Calendar of Events

San Salvador is a vibrant city that offers plenty of cultural activities, festivals and religious feasts. When you plan your visit, you will definitely want to try and be there for one.

• Las Bolas de Fuego. This festival takes place on the 31st of August and involves people with colourful face paint performing tricks with fireballs made out of petrol-soaked rags. It's also a bit of a crazy time as youngsters get up to all sorts of mischief.

• San Miguel Carnival. The town of San Miguel near the capital hosts the country's biggest and best known Carnival. The festivities are held to honour the village patron saint, but the religious tones are forgotten during the celebrations as dancing girls in elaborate costumes dance to samba and reggae in the streets.

• All Saints and All Souls. This religious feast remembers the dead and the departed. El Salvador is deeply religious and this commemoration of the dead has a sombre tone which mixes Christianity and Pagan elements.
