It sounds like something from a dream: a dense alley of palm trees lining white, sandy beaches that overlook a turquoise ocean, but this is exactly what you can expect from Punta Cana. This resort town lies on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic and boasts a 100 km coastline that faces the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The tropical climate and many luxury resorts make it a favourite holiday spot for tourists from all over the world.
This popular resort town got its start back in 1969 when a group of American investors bought a tract of undeveloped land on the Dominican coastline. By 1971 the first hotel was built and by 198, the commercial airport was opened. What was once little more than a remote and wild location with a dense jungle and a beautiful coastline has since been developed into one of the most sought-after Caribbean holiday destinations.
Today Punta Cana boasts more than 60 luxury resorts and multiple golf courses along the coast. The epitome of luxury, indulgence and relaxation, this resort town offers visitors beachfront services, infinity pools, water sports, fantastic dining and so much more.
Whether you are travelling as a family or looking for a romantic getaway for you and your partner, look no further. Most resorts in Punta Cana cater to families and an all-inclusive holiday will include everything from meals and drinks to activities to keep the children entertained. Most family-friendly resorts have a separate entertainment area for children as well, allowing parents some well-deserved uninterrupted beach time. Several adults-only resorts cater to those visitors who would prefer a quieter stay in paradise. Whichever resort you choose, there is plenty to keep you busy while staying here:
Golfer's paradise
Golfers can enjoy world-class golf courses with designs influenced by golfing legends like Gary Player, Nick Price, Robert Trent Jones and much more. The tropical climate, winding fairways and breathtaking sea views all create the perfect setting for a golf game you are not likely to forget.
Aquatic excursions
There is no shortage of tours available, but a snorkelling tour should be at the top of the list for visitors. One such excursion, the Marinarium, takes guests on a cruise to explore the nearby reef and enjoy some snorkelling. This is followed by a sightseeing cruise along the coast and topped off with cocktails.
Whale Watching: Every year between January and March visitors can watch between 3000 and 5000 whales migrate to Samaná Bay. Make sure to book a guided to tour to make the most of this experience.
Visitors to Punta Cana will certainly not lack for entertainment. Hotels host regular events for their guests and there are also some local events to look forward to, including:
The **Punta Cana** Carnival: A tradition inherited from the Dominican Republic's Spanish forefathers, this carnival parade through the resort town takes place in early March of every year. The Food and Wine Festival: What could be better than enjoying great cuisine while in paradise? In July visitors can look forward to a festival that celebrates fine dining. To Punta Cana from
