Billund is a small town in the Jutland region of Denmark that is famous for being home to Legoland Park and the biggest water park in Scandinavia. Legoland is the biggest draw and offers fun and activities for young kids and big kids and after a tour of the factory, visitors can spend the rest of the day at the theme park where incredibly detailed models bring the toys to life.
Lego built the airport, which is the second largest airport in Denmark and it was sited close to the natural forests as well as the coast, which offers idyllic sandy beaches. The centre of the town, which is home to about 6,000 people, also houses the Kongerners Jelling which celebrates Viking culture in Denmark.
The history buffs can also pay a visit to the Vandel Museum, which is a restored Cold War bunker control centre. If you want to enjoy the Danish forests, then look no further than the edge of town as it is surrounded by trees with plenty of wildlife to be seen. If you don't manage to see any animals in the wild, then you can also pay a visit to the Givskud Zoo.
Billund has much more to offer than just Legoland Theme Park. It has incredible museums to visit and one of the best experiences that it has to offer are free: The wild forests and the beautiful white sand beaches.
Admittedly, Legoland is an attraction that you simply cannot afford to miss if you are visiting Jutland. The theme park is great for kids and adults alike and the intricacies involved in constructing models of whole cities and replicas of world famous buildings are to be seen to be believed.
If water is your thing, then you will certainly want to head to Lalandia Winter Wonder World which is home to Scandinavia's biggest water park and Aquadome. You can enjoy anything from thrilling waterslide rides to doing not much at all on a heated lazy river or delight in saunas and heated pools.
Billund has two great museums for the history buffs; the Kongerners Jelling museum tells the tale of Viking culture in Denmark. You can also visit the Vandel Museum, which is a living interpretation of how Denmark helped NATO keep an eye on USSR during the Cold War.
Billund is a busy little town, but being in Scandinavia, most outdoor activities and festivals are held during the summer months when the days are longer and the sun stays high in the sky.
Skagen Winter Swimming Festival: This one is not for the fainthearted, as brave swimmers jump into the icy sea in January for this annual swimming event.
Byens Fest: During the first week of June, Billund celebrates Byens Fest with open air markets, music, dance, traditional food and a celebration of Danish culture.
Halloween: Legoland holds an annual celebration of all things ghoulish with Halloween symbols like pumpkins, witches and cauldrons crafted from Lego bricks on display.
