A beautiful and fascinating city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, Barranquilla is the capital of the Atlántico Department and the largest port in the region. With a population of 2,370,753, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the country. It is known as The Golden Gate of Colombia due to its location linking it to the rest of the country and the Caribbean.
The town was officially established in 1813, although it is at least 200 years older than that, making it the only settlement in South America that was populated before its official foundation. This is due to its strategic location near a port, and it was an important haven for immigrants from Asia, Europe and the Middle East during the First and Second World Wars.
The city is known as the home of the famous Carnival of Barranquilla but the city also offers visitors a wide variety of must-see and must-do attractions. From the gorgeous baroque architecture of the Museo Romantico to the flat barge trips to Bocas de Ceniza, there is something to keep everyone occupied as they explore the gorgeous portal to the Land of Magical Realism.
For visitors of any age or interest, there is something to appeal to everyone in Barranquilla.
