Nanjing in China is the capital of Jiangsu Province's and lies on the banks of the Yangtze River. The city's name means "southern capital" and it's well-known for its historical and cultural heritage, having been the capital city during several dynasties in the past. Not surprisingly, there are many historical sites such as the Ming Tombs, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Confucius Temple.

Travellers might be tempted to simply pass through the city while en route from Shànghǎi to Běijīng. However, to do so would be to miss out on its impressive historical heritage as well as its clean and handsome environment. The major attractions remind visitors of the city's former importance during the Ming Dynasty and most of Nanjing is surrounded by its glorious old city walls.

With a cultured and relaxed atmosphere, visitors can enjoy the city's boulevards, cafes and museums as well as venture outdoors to discover the lakes, parks and rivers. As far as annual events and festivals go, there's the Qinhuai International Lantern Festival, the Nanjing International Plum Blossom Festival, and the Dragon Boat festival to entertain and delight those spending time in the city.
