Nestled on the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, Bourgas offers a beach experience combined with the history and culture of the city. Seaside Park is a green and attractive spot located on the bay with its promenades and Summer Theatre performances, while close by people can try their luck at the Marine Casino. Among the history of the city, the Regional Historical Museum and Natural History Museum are an interesting visit as is the Saints Cyril and Methodius Cathedral and Ethnographic Museum. Culture buffs can enjoy several art galleries as well as the Opera House, State Puppet Theatre and Dramatic Theatre.
The city offers much in the way of entertainment and dining, with taverns and restaurants in the city centre and on the sea front, as well as bars, casinos and an excellent nightlife. For fresh air fun, there are bicycle tracks in Lake Park, while Sea Park offers a stroll in the fresh sea air. Each year the city hosts many literature, art and music festivals which attract visitors from all over the world including the fascinating Sand Sculptures Festival, the International Folklore Festival and the Spirit of Burgas international music festival.
Attractions in Bourgas range from beach and nature activities to cultural visits to interesting museums, art galleries and theatres. There is plenty of shopping to be had in the city centre as well as green and pretty parks for relaxation.
The largest of its kind in southern Bulgaria, the Regional Historical Museum was founded in 1912 and is an archaeological museum located in the city centre. On display are collections from Ancient Thracia, the Roman Empire and the Greek colonies of the Black Sea Coast, as well as locally discovered artefacts.
Located on the coast of Bourgas, the Sea Garden is the city's largest and most popular park. The park, which dates back to 1910, is mostly planted with attractive shrubs and trees and has several monuments and fountains. Summer theatre events are held here.
The only museum of its kind on the Black Sea Coast, the Natural History Museum was set up to protect the unique natural diversity of the area. On display are various collections, including the flora and fauna of Strandzha Mountain, the magical world of rocks and bird resources of the lake area of the city.
Each year Bourgas celebrates a number of festivals and events relating to the culture and traditions of the region. Music and Bulgarian folklore feature prominently, but there are also unusual attractions including a sand sculpture event.
Sand Sculptures Festival: Started in 2008, the Sand Sculptures Festival is held each summer and has become one of the city's most popular attractions. Some of the best sand art masters in Bulgaria and the world display their genius and technique.
Spirit of Burgas Music Festival: One of Europe's most prominent summer festivals, the Spirit of Burgas was started in 2008 and is now held in August each year. With several stages, the festival includes rock, dance, hip hop, metal, electronic and Latin music.
International Folklore Festival: Held every August, the folklore festival was started in 1965 to preserve the legacy and traditions of the area. Visitors can enjoy a range of folk songs and dance on open stages in the city as well as a market selling traditional souvenirs.
