Located just to the east of Tortola, one of the British Virgin Island's largest Isles, lies the charming and beautiful Beef Island. Although a small island, the region boasts a wealth of attractions for visitors -- particularly those who are interested in the natural world. The island is also framed by some of the most stunning beaches, each with fine, powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters. Water sports enthusiasts are also particularly drawn to the region due to its excellent snorkelling and array of water sports on offer.
The island's main town, Trellis Bay, was used by sailors during long voyages as a place to stock up on essential foodstuffs and supplies such as smoked beef and subsequently became known as Beef Island. Trellis Bay is popular with both tourists and locals alike for its array of unique shops selling crafts, artwork and a plethora of fine restaurants offering freshly caught seafood and fish. The Islanders also organise a selection of festivals throughout the year, with most occurring during a full moon. Visit during the month of June for the Fishermans Festival. The event spans three days and is held in honour of the fishermen's past and present. Local fishermen compete and showcase their skills and the family-friendly event also features live music and fun-filled activities.
The beautiful isle of Beef Island is famed for its coral reef and water sports meaning that a swathe of enthusiasts flood the island each year. The beaches are also renowned as some of the most beautiful of the group of Islands and the warm, temperate climate entices sun lovers.
Long Bay Beach spans both sides of the Beef Island Bridge. This beach is never crowded and the clear, blue waters are always calm and ideal for swimming. The beaches are flanked by the most stunning scenery and when the weather is scorching, bathers can shade beneath the trees.
In addition to snorkelling in the coral reef, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are also popular pastimes. All these activities are available on the majority of beaches for a small fee.
Head to Sage Mountain National Park. Open from dawn to dusk, this area of outstanding natural beauty is mostly covered by rainforest and is the natural habitat of many species of exotic birds. There are more than ten different trails throughout the park and each trail is rated in terms of its level of difficulty.
