This is a city in two parts, the modern areas of Estreito and Coqueiros sit across the river from the historic heart and the chic Beira-Mar Norte district. Ponte Hercílio Luz, the old suspension bridge that joined them, is now traffic-free and is a symbolic part of the city's skyline especially when illuminated at night. Florianopolis was originally home to the Tupi people with an archaeological presence going back 4,000 years. Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa was built in 1740 as part of a string of fortresses defending the city's northern coastline. It occupies a stunning position that delivers excellent views of North Bay while its architecture is rich in different building styles.

There are no less than 42 beaches in Florianopolis. Canasvieiras, Praia Brava and Saquinho are recommended for a lazy day sunbathing while Lagoa da Conceição with its watersports attracts jet setters and thrill seekers from across the globe.

• A walk on the wild side

The State Park Of Serra do Tabuleiro, located just south of the city, features a mountain landscape interspersed with rivers and spectacular waterfalls. A special reserve area looks after endangered species such as the tapir and capybara and it is well worth a visit for anyone from nature lovers to aspiring photographers.

It's no secret that Brazil loves to party and Florianopolis is no exception, with a packed programme that kicks off with Carnival in February and carries on with everything from beach parties, tango and oysters to films and music festivals.

• Festa do Divino: Following 40 days on from the religious events of Holy Week is Festa do Divino which celebrates the Holy Spirit. This is closely followed by the festivities of Corpus Christi.

• International Tango Festival: Whether you love to be on the dance floor or would rather just be entranced by a well-executed tango you'll have plenty of opportunities at this tango festival held at the Centro Integral de Cultural in the month of June.

• National Oyster Festival: This event in October is quite unique to the city and celebrates a successful oyster harvest. Indulge in a veritable feast of fresh oysters and other seafood-based dishes.
