Located at the tip of Haulover Creek and the largest city in Belize, Belize City is a cosmopolitan metropolis and a favourite destination for those who seek sunshine holidays combined with a packed itinerary of interesting attractions. Founded in 1638 and originally named Belize Town, the region was established by British lumber farmers who settled in the area. Around the same period, the British also brought thousands of African slaves to work on the lumber farms. British courts were still present in the area up until the 1970s.
The region enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, with warm and humid temperatures throughout the year. Not only does the region boast a wealth of attractions in its own right but the surrounding area also offers a selection of historical and cultural attractions in addition to national parks. Altun Ha is one of the area's most visited architectural sites and features a Mayan temple. Belize City is also renowned for its charming festivals and age-old celebrations. Visit in July when the Benque Viejo del Carmen Fiesta Local fair is hosted. The festival is in honour of city's patron saint and onlookers are treated to cultural shows, live music, competitions and parades. The event spans nine days.
As with most world-class cities, Belize City offers a host of fun-filled and interesting attractions for visitors of all ages and interests. Dine in one of the fine restaurants or shop in one of the many boutique stores -- the choice is yours.
Visit the street along the Tourist Village, where local craftsmen and artists erect tents and stalls. Choose from jewellery, woven blankets, carved wooden ornaments, T-shirts and a host of other handcrafted goods.
Dine at Nerie's II Restaurant and sample one of the chef's signature dishes. The impressive menu offers stewed cows foot, lobster, deer and a selection of other delicious dishes.
Situated on the outskirts of town, Altun Ha is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the region. The remains of the Mayan Sun God Kinich Ahu were discovered at the site's temple.
With such a rich and diverse culture, the residents of Belize City host a myriad of festivals and events throughout the year. Many of the events are religious in nature, however, there is also a selection of sporting events too.
Hosted in July, the Benque Viejo del Carmen Fiesta Local Fair is held in honour of the city's Patron Saint. The event features parades, competitions, cultural shows and live music.
The Dia de San Pedro festival is held each June and celebrates the Patron Saint San Pedro. The festival features a Karaoke competition, fishing tournament and cultural evening.
The La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is a multi-day event and features canoe racing along the Belize and Macal Rivers. The event is attended by locals, visitors and canoe racing enthusiasts from around the world.
