The largest city of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and home to more than 250,000 inhabitants, Nassau was named after the Prince of Orange-Nassau, William III of England. This vibrant and modern city features a tropical monsoon climate and enjoys warm, sunny and temperate weather throughout the year. Founded in 1670 by British noblemen and originally named Charles Town, the region boasts a fascinating albeit tumultuous history. Nonetheless, the region's heritage is carefully preserved in the collection of museums around the city and history lovers will be delighted by the array of historical sites on offer.
The city also attracts sun lovers due to its sizzling weather and a fine selection of picture postcard beaches offering powder white sands, turquoise waters and mirrored by azure blue skies. Visit during the month of December and be entertained by the rhythmic sounds of goat-skin drums as the ethnic music permeates the streets during the Junkanoo Festival. The event takes place on Boxing Day and New Years Day and features colourful parades with participants wearing elaborate clothing and dancing their way through the streets of downtown Nassau.
There is no shortage of activities and attractions in this stunning region, however, no visit would be complete without visiting one of the many beaches around the city and the myriad of restaurants serve a fine offering of local and international cuisine.
Bask in the sunshine at Montagu Beach in downtown Nassau. Flanked by gently swaying palm trees and downed with fine, white sand this picturesque beach overlooks the ocean which is safe for swimming.
Dine at Café Martinique, the site where a scene from the James Bond movie 'Thunderball' was filmed. The opulent surroundings feature both European and Caribean influences and the French cuisine is renowned throughout the region.
Situated on Bay Street, the Straw Market boasts a plethora of stalls selling handcrafted straw products, the oldest industry in the region, souvenirs, gifts, clothing and jewellery.
The Bahamas Coconut Festival: The Bahamas Coconut Festival is hosted on Easter Monday each year. The event, as its name suggests, celebrates the coconut and festival goers are treated to coconut dishes and products. Additionally, live music, competitions and workshops entertain onlookers.
The Sand & Soul Festival: The Sand & Soul Festival is hosted in October and spans three days. The event features music, pool parties and comedy. Festival goers are treated to live performances from iconic musicians from around the world.
Junkanoo: Hosted in December, Junkanoo is an ethnic and cultural festival which celebrates the fight against slavery and oppression. Elaborately dressed participants dance down the main streets to the beating sound of goat-skin drums. This is one of the largest festivals in the country and is attended by visitors from all over the world.
