Almost definitely the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia is also the largest town in the Tierra del Fuego region of Argentina. Lying beneath the Martial Range of the snow-capped Andes, the city is a fascinating jumble of steep streets and colonial buildings. The city makes the most of its location at the "end of the world" and is seen very much as a gateway to Antarctica, while the Tierra del Fuego National Park provides plenty of outdoor adventure and dramatic scenery right on the doorstep. Craft beer is big in the city, so select a warm microbrewery and grab a pint while you plan outdoor activities such as sailing, skiing, hiking and kayaking. Before you head off into the wilds, take in Ushuaia's history at the Museum at the End of the World and Yatana Park.
Walking around Ushuaia reveals an elegant city with prettily restored late-19th and early-20th-century buildings as well as a growing variety of cultural and historic attractions. Wherever you are in the town, it's impossible to overlook the lakes and mountains that surround it.
This museum has exhibits that cover Fuegian natural history as well as looking at the period when the area was a penal colony.
Parque Yatana is a clever combination of urban park and craft market. This city forest is protected and provides a tranquil spot where locals practise traditional weaving. The park also has an art centre and hiking trails.
The spectacular Tierra del Fuego National Park is full of lakes, mountains, glaciers and wildlife. Part of the park experience is picking up the End of the World Steam Train at a station that was once a prison.
With its position almost at the end of the world and the snowy mountain landscape that surrounds it, it is no surprise that both things are celebrated in Ushuaia's calendar of festivals and events.
Festival Nacional de la Noche Más Larga. Held in June, this coincides with the Winter Solstice and features musical performances that range from tango and jazz to classical and pop. During the week, there is also a "Fuego de los Deseos"; Everyone writes down the things that are stopping them from achieving their dreams and throws the paper on a large bonfire.
Marcha Blanca. Taking place in August, this is an annual cross-country event which celebrates and recreates San Martín's epic crossing of the Andes in 1817. Master classes in skiing, sculptures made of snow and a Nordic ski marathon complete the event.
Biennial of Contemporary Art at the End of the World. Since 2007 artists from across the globe have come to Ushuaia for this event which is also known as "The South Pole of the Arts, Sciences and Ecology". Artists are encouraged to exhibit work that shows "once you reach the end of one world, another is possible".
