The history of Algiers is a turbulent one, which has shaped the diverse city we see today. The Phoenicians, and then the Romans, settled in the area before the Berbers founded the present city in 944 AD. The Spanish arrived in the 1300s, before the city was captured by the Ottomans in 1516. From 1830 to independence in 1962, the city was ruled by the French - a period which saw a great amount of European settlement and a substantial programme of building work.
The eventful history of the city can be seen in the stunning architecture. There is a fascinating mix of wide French era boulevards, with stunning European style apartment buildings and villas. The Casbah quarter features more traditional North African architecture, with the oldest buildings dating from 1516. The Great Mosque, meanwhile, is even older, dating from 1097 with its distinctive minaret being built in 1324. To take a break from the bustle of the city, the seaside resorts of Douaouda, Palm Beach and Sidi Fredj lie just 12 miles or so along the coast to the west. These have many shops and restaurants, supervised beaches and even a water park at El Aurassi.
Algiers is a cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do. The mixture of cultures creates a unique atmosphere, both familiar and exotic at once. Take some time to explore with these suggestions as your guide.
