Fiji Airways is the flag carrier airline of the small nation of Fiji. It was established towards the end of World War 2 and was then known as Katafaga Estates. Although the service was already running by 1947, it made its first commercial flight as Fiji Airways in 1951. Between 1958 and 2012, the company was known as Air Pacific, and this is still the name under which it trades. Currently, Fiji Airways is under the ownership of the Air Pacific Group and has its headquarters in Nadi, Fiji.

The current fleet of Fiji Airways consists of nine aircraft, both Boeing jets and Airbuses. The largest aircraft in the fleet is the Airbus A330-300, and this is used for long-haul flights. The company has grown to become a major international airline. Today, it makes over 400 direct flights every week to 24 destinations in the world. It is the only airline in Fiji that makes direct flights to the USA. The longest route flown by this airline was from Nadi to Beijing, the capital of China, followed by Nadi to Los Angeles.

Interestingly, Fiji Airways is probably the oldest airline that has never had a crash or accident. The only notable incident in the history of the airline occurred in 2018 when one of their aircraft caught fire, but there were no injuries or deaths as the event was appropriately handled.

The carrier joined the Oneworld Alliance a few years ago, and the alliance was co-founded by one of its larger shareholders, Qantas. As a member of the association, the airline is able to provide straightforward connections to its clients as it partners with other airlines. It also supports schools and hospitals through its Wings of Hope charity.

Fiji Airways Check-in & Baggage

For a seamless trip, it is important to check-in at the recommended periods. For international flights, travelers are required to check-in within an hour of departure. Those who choose Business Class should note that the check-in counters close 50 minutes prior to departure.

Travelers taking domestic Fiji flights should check-in 90 minutes before the departure time. The counter closes 30 minutes prior to departure.

For those flying with Economy Class, the recommended total dimensions for luggage is 118 cm (46 in), going up to 55cm X 40cm X 23cm including handles and wheels for more expensive tickets. All passengers can carry one small personal item such as a laptop or a hand bag in addition to carry-on baggage.

Additional Information

Bulky or oversized items, including sports equipment and musical instruments will incur a charge of 100 FJD per item. Any single piece of luggage exceeding 158cm (62in) but not exceeding 277cm (109in) in total dimensions and with a maximum weight of 23kg (50lbs) can be taken onboard the flight.
